“A Realistic act can also be a Heroic Act”

Today as we face present-day problems, we tend to act in a realistic and sometimes risky ways. These realistic acts consider the primary needs of the person specially money, food, and security of tenure. Being realistic sometimes we disregard being heroic because we tend to think for ourselves only setting aside the benefit of giving and taking. Being in the survival position, you will hunt for the deer in the forest thinking these could solve hunger and your kids’ despair not knowing and setting aside your fellowmen specially the poor. We strive for ourselves sometimes using the wicked ones as our stepping stones. I admired the guy who strived the most not for herself but for her realistic dream for the country. For her, “it is realistic to respond to the needs of the country”. This was Sabrina Ongkiko, an aspiring Doctor from Ateneo De Manila University, a graduate of BS Biology from the school itself, and specially a very proud teacher of Culiat Elementary School. Many of us had this one question “Why would a Atenista like her chose to teach in a public school?” but she thought of bringing hope and change disregarding places and events. There were things that we could not change because it is in the crowd’s point of view but she defined public schools as “pag asa” or hope, public school teachers as “kasabay”, and the public school students as “magaling” or brilliant. As I mentioned earlier we couldn’t make everyone believe in our beliefs but Sabrina is pretty sure that “there are more passionate, caring and thoughtful teachers that teachers who doesn’t care about their students and neglecting and forgetting duties”. She believed that teachers are determined to bring hope to the dying nation with high percentage of uneducated persons. With this urge, she brought a very bright future to a very simple kid named Darwin. Darwin was with Sabrina when he first entered ADMU. The kid was shocked because the University had this very wide field. Dreaming that one day he could enter this institution, she told Sabrina “Mam, I will study here”. That public school student with dreams on top now achieved his aspiration and is currently studying at Ateneo de Manila University High School Department. That is how realistic actions turned into heroic ones. Maybe this act cannot match the heroic deeds that Rizal, Bonifacio, and Aguinaldo did but this simple act could change a twenty’s to millions and rags to riches and specially a dying society into healthy living ones. Sabrina is now eyeing in creating support groups for the passionate teachers like her named Kape’t Guro with plenty of meaning in it. Kape’t Guro can be also read as Kapit Guro meaning teachers that the students could really rely on.  With these goals and a lot of it in her desire, She cannot forget the greatest accomplishment that they made with his kids and that is  when all of her students passed the quiz about conductors and insulators in their Science subject. We could really see here the “Kapit Guro” that she is pertaining to. We could really rely with our teachers by making it fair square. Fair and square in terms of accomplishing our duties and responsibilities as a student while doing also the part in the side of the Teachers. As a very brilliant saying of our hero, Jose P. Rizal “Ang kabataan ay ang pag-asa ng bayan”, we youth need to perform our responsibilities efficiently for us to be the future soldiers of the society but no one is an island, we need our Parents, Relatives and Friends, and specially Teachers for them to guide, bear, and help us in the struggles and barricades in the journey through bright future.
