Generating Research Ideas 101

Tired of getting research ideas being rejected? Sick of thinking and trying to generate ideas? This post is the best for you since I will share some of my thoughts on how to quickly have a good insight on what and how a great and brilliant research should be made!

Disclaimer: I am not a professional researcher nor in the field of researching. I am just a typical student who struggled before in seeking for good research ideas yet received acknowledgement for successfully creating a good one.

1. Observe- Try to stop, look, and not really listen but think! Look closely at those things that you frequently saw. Starting with the simple things like pollution, addiction, and everything that requires solution. Observe things like a child who wishes for answers. Childhood maybe the time that we asked plenty of questions yet it taught us to be curious about how cars work, why birds chirp, or even why people defacate. See, those basic questions has answers and certainly like those questions somewhat intellectuals before provided good explanations about this. We learned how to answer questions yet we forgot how to ask anymore.

 2. Never stop asking QUESTIONS!- If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking (Murakami, n.d). Likewise with Murakami's assertion, look at the other side of the picture and ask everything like no one has ever done before. I greatly emphasized asking questions since the rationale of the research is to ask questions. We certainly need answers for questions yet we asked always the same questions others tried or successfully answered before. Ask questions the way no one asked before. Open yourself in the wildest thoughts possible and ask a certain question other way around. If you cannot think of a question, then question the answer that others gave to solve a problem if that certain answer is applicable to the present time. Again, ask differently and ask questions in an exceptional way.

3. Time and Scope- After observing and asking, look closely at the scope of the problem or question that you really want to answer. Is this for the whole country? for the whole state? for a certain vicinity? But never limit the solution within a certain time frame and scope only. Make research as essential as it could be to other generations. That may sound weird but as long as we think of solving present and future problems, we can make researching as meaningful as it could be. Set the longest and widest range as possible so that it can benefit the greater good.

4. Hear them out- Put yourself in the shoes of others so you could barely understand them. We already knew the problem but the vitality of asking them what is going on takes the issue on certain levels. We seek already yet we do not listen to the personas in the picture, try to ask those persons involved in the issue. Furthermore, we can assert that listening to their problems and asking them what kind of solution is needed makes us satisfied that the problem is left unanswered.

5. Educate yourself- Search, research, and search again. After going through those previous steps, it is your time to educate yourself with the problem. You already generated a good question yet you are lacking of information to solve and provide answers to the question in an intellectual, theoretical, or systematical manner. Read books related to your study. Never feel that you are in trouble if you cannot find a direct literature or study that talks about your idea yet feel glad since no one asked the same question like you did. With that, look at the ideas CLOSELY related to the idea to generate information. We need to educate ourselves with related ideas so that we could use it as a proof or evidence to furthermore expound the idea.

6. Guidance- Seek for someone's help and ask their opinion about the ideas and information you generated. Two heads are better than one as they say, ask for opinions to the proposal you made and adjust if the idea is feasible or not. Your teachers, adviser, professor, or maybe your parents can help you to make yourself guided with the whole gist of the study. They can give you quality flow or context on how you should deal with the topic correctly and efficiently. Maybe you are asking why asking for help is the last resort and I can give you answer for that. Since you need to exchange information with them, you also need to have lots and lots of knowledge about the topic so it can be a two way conversation.

7. Ordinary into Extraordinary- It is exasperating as it is and maybe you are losing hope right now. As you thought about things that no one has ever done before like observing, asking, ranging, hearing, educating, and asking help, do it in a very extraordinary way. These ordinary thinking and ordinary things like being tired, drained, and getting really mad to those group mates who just sings lullaby while you are staying up the whole night, instill and inculcate in your brain that you are doing extraordinary things right now. Never set to be ordinary and also never fear to be weird. Life is the revenge of the nerds or the weird since they now how to be extraordinary. Remember, today is the future of the brightest days and research makes you ON THE GO for a brighter tomorrow.
